(From the RA): ‘When Avery died in 1965, Rothko was among the over 600 people to attend his memorial service. He lauded him as “a great poet” in a moving eulogy that celebrated Avery’s work as a “poetry of sheer loveliness, of sheer beauty”… He said he “had that inner power in which gentleness and silence proved more audible and poignant.”
The painter’s whose work especially speaks to me evokes the sentiment Rothko describes. Every time I pick up a brush I hope that those painter’s wisdom and poetry will speak to me and something of their brilliance will rub off.
Cranberry Island artists Dorothy Eisner & Robert Lahotan, along with Milton Avery provided me with the loudest council when I assembled this.
