The Sea Sparkled when the Unicorn Arrived

£0.00

Egg tempera on three panels: 26 x 14 cm; 26.5 x 37.5 cm; 26 x 14 cm, in bespoke gilded frame
made by Patrick Guyver, August 2026

Before beginning this painting, Patrick had constructed a folding frame with a clasp, altar style inspired by ‘Siena’ at the National Gallery. I thought of Cedric Morris’s, Cabbages, 1953 as I assembled the set up..

I knew I would need Maine in the mix so got out my sketchbooks and made a large pastel drawing from them about a favourite cove on Cranberry Island. I arranged a long series of objects in front of the drawing.

I chose the figurine — Quilin delivering a child  as he is bringing a male son on a unicorn and the unicorn is our stork, and a deeply auspicious Chinese symbol. Its presence is a blessing to a family and portends fulfilled wishes. ‘as you like’. And the safe delivery of a son.

I enjoyed letting the colour guide me and for my imagination to let my ‘dreamscape’ emerge.
