Tales of the Unexpected

£0.00

Tales of the Unexpected, egg tempera on panel, 20 x 30 cm, May 2025

When Patrick and I met we discovered we had nearly the same record collection and were reading the same book. I had never read any of Roald Dahl’s short stories and Patrick had a copy of ‘Tales of the Unexpected’. That title sums up the unlikeliness of our coming together the way we did, far from home at the base of the Elgeyo Escarpement.

Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to wonderful paintings. One show that left an indelible impression was Milton Avery in Mexico. The colours, the planes, the subject matter made me want to travel. I went to India with my mother in my early twenties and the patterns have underpinned my painting ever since.

And now, we live in a funny old house with lots of wildlife. It’s getting to be peach season; my calendulas are out; and I found some lime-tinged magenta petunias at a local garden centre.
