Egg tempera on panel, 27 x 20 cm, November 2025
I was on a boat in Lake Dal with my mother. It was early in the morning, and we were going to a floating market. The lake had lotus flowers; our shikara boatman offered us lotus roots to taste. I knew enough not to eat something raw plucked from the muddy lake but when I had the chance to order lotus root on the menu, I did. Since then, lotus flowers have always held a certain magic for me. As I painted the vase, I understood that the visitors in this tableau had been called to order by the unfurling flower.
The dormouse was a gift from our second set of visitors in October. The fourth set have a Siamese cat.
Occasionally an arrangement of colour makes me swoon. This one did and as I painted the flowers, which had been bewitching me for days before I began to paint them, I thought of Frida.
