Hope on Joy Street
For me, painting in egg tempera is soothing. It isn’t always easy, or even fun some of the time, but building layers of colour, looking at relationships, correcting, composing; they are all slow and contemplative processes, and as a person who is pretty much always ‘on’, painting in egg tempera is a counterbalance to my natural way of being.
I knew the lead up to the US election was going to be stressful, but it was even more stressful than I could have imagined. In preparation, I organized a focus: The JOY AND HOPE PROJECT. Everything post exhibition at Snape was about Joy and Hope. I don’t usually work this way, but I relished it.
As the last in the series, this one has plenty of Hope and Joy shoe-horned in. Cranes symbolize longevity, peace, good fortune, honor, and loyalty. Laughing Buddha is a representation of joy and happiness; laughing Buddha may alleviate feelings of stress and help to let go of worries. In this one, the cat is a good luck charm and the persimmon another talisman. Primroses and the oranges and yellows of the dahlias made me feel optimistic. Sadly the election didn’t turn out the way I hoped.
