pastel on opened book, 19 x 27 cm.
One of my studio ‘house-keeping’ activities is to assemble old books into sketchbooks or glue pages down to make opened books. I do this thinking how I will use the prepared surface later. Mostly I forget and come upon the support and get a new idea, months or years after.
Finding ‘Joy Street’ ready to work on, I noticed the word ‘Florida ‘in the words.
My mother is a native Floridian, and I spent many childhood vacations there. It is a place with orange and pomegranate trees in the memories of my mind. My mother returned to Florida and divides her time between there and Maine now. I have only been back three times since I married. Five or so years ago she posted a photo of the view from her deck of the wonderland she has created. This drawing started with that.
