We Tell Ourselves Stories

£0.00

egg tempera on panel, 20 x 27cm, September, 2025

I have been re-reading Alice Neel’s ‘Hot Off The Griddle’. The front and back leaf of the book have a few of her quotes,

‘The minute I sat in front of a canvas I was happy

because it was a world, and I could do what I liked.

‘The thing that always made me happiest in the world

was to paint a good picture.’

I see myself as a storyteller. I never know whether my painting is going to be a good picture but as I assemble my objects, I have my interior monologue. Two perfect crisp apples – left on the table, in haste by someone on the way to the airport. I think of Snow White. Little Red Riding Hood stands beneath her Tithonia with her friendly fox. The Seamstress sews. Favourite Dahlias in bud vases compete for prominence with Guanyin and my favourite foo dog. This is my snapshot of life today.  "We tell ourselves stories in order to live" – Joan Didion
