Egg tempera on panel, 20 x 26 cm, February 2026 and September 2025
There’s an exhibition coming up and I had to submit titles and sizes and mediums weeks ago. January/February are the busiest time for me for submitting work. I don’t have a spreadsheet, but I do have lists for all the opens I commit work to.
At this time of year, I may have twenty pieces on those lists. I commit – plenty of the work isn’t selected but except for once, I never commit the same piece twice. The time I did, both opens chose it and I learned my lesson.
So, for the exhibition I committed work for earlier this year, I wasn’t convinced about one of the pieces. (Having twenty of ‘your best new work’ is tricky.) This week I made a piece that is a similar size with the same name as the one I committed. I have done this before. It gives me agency and is an interesting challenge.
I wonder which one you like best and which one I should hang?
