On a Slow Boat to China

£0.00

Egg tempera on panel, 30 x 31 cm, August 2025

‘I’d like to get you on a slow boat to China
All to myself alone
Get you and keep you in my arms evermore
Leave all your lovers weeping on the faraway shore

Out on the briny with the moon big and shinny
Melting your heart of stone
I’d love to get you on a slow boat to China
All to myself alone’

I put the song on a mixed tape. At twenty-six getting a boyfriend on a slow boat to China was about the most romantic thing I could imagine. That was what the tin boat at the front of the still life excited in me when I found it at the antiques shop next to the Pond Gallery at Snape (for £3). The green shell was also found there, but that is going to Annabel now that I’ve painted it.

The people, the postcards are all found objects, as is the majolica leaf. Patrick, who I sent the tape to, is making me more frames. The flowers are in front of one of them. For now just a different red and another plane. Caroline gifted me a big swatch of her printed fabric, and its colour was almost as exciting as the boat. If you know me from Maine you know I think I was a seal in another life. Finally, doesn’t every cabin have a basket of fruit?
