egg tempera on panel, 23 x 15.5 cm, July 2026
Imagine me walking through the garden gathering flowers and thinking about a new frame that is in the works. I want this one to be mostly about the flowers. I start collecting the flowers that feel bleached but are made that way… flowers more about their shape and their tone than their colour, for once.
I have just run around the field 12 times to make my 5K morning run and noticed all the wild carrot, the thistles and lady’s bedstraw. In my head I am Burglar Bill, ‘I’ll have that’’, until my bouquet is full of this and that –– about 20 this and that’s from the garden proper and nature’s garden. including branches from hedges.
I bring them all back to the studio and lay them on the bench. Drat! I realise my dahlia is too short. I grab a skewer and stab it through the stalk and trim the skewer until it is just the right height. I find a vase and decide I will change it so Guan Yin can be part of this arrangement. The goat is me. The plums represent time. They were planted when the studio was built. The backdrop is a scarf I bought with my mother in India, and the love birds are us, working together to make our paintings and frames speak.
