Using a still life set-up, I worked from a series of photos to invent a still life based on things I had seen in Yalding, where I’d been to meet up with a friend I’d met in Singapore when we were young mothers. I always need to look at real things in front of me to understand relationships, ligth, etc... Having said that, these kinds of paintings are logistical challenges and I end up using my imagination and poetic license more…


I think of these collaged paintings as similar to making my Covid paintings for NHS workers in that I communed with these objects like I did withy the doctors and nurses’ images and through that felt as if I knew them.

I guess it’s a painting that nods to the past and cements things in the present and future.
