Five minutes at the Gallery

This blog post is meant to make you laugh!

People ask me how it feels to talk about your work, and be in the space when your paintings are on show at a gallery. I LOVE to talk about my work and for the most part I will make sure I am at the gallery. But occasionally it’s amusing to eavesdrop.

Saturday before the opening party – Pond gallery 2025

On Sunday I was the first in the gallery for a few hours. There was a steady flow of people and this is what happened in the space of the first five minutes:

They come in. She looks. She wants to look. He scans, hoping to move on swiftly. She follows. They spend one minute and sixteen seconds in the gallery.

Two minutes later, the next pair come in. She says, pointing to my display of objects, objects you can find in my paintings, ‘ We have enough of this junk on our shelves.’

He looks at each picture. A smile flickers. She goes in the back room. DONE. He follows. When they come back into the main room, he points to my paintings on the other side of the door and says, ‘these are nice.’ ‘too whimsical for our walls,’ she says,

A family of three come in. the father and daughter are scheming about a painting. The mother says, ‘ if mummy bought that sh’ed have to redecorate the front room.’

You’ll be pleased to know that over our week at the Pond Gallery we all sold lots of work and had other, more encouraging conversations.
